Continue to Lake Atitlán, a spectacular crater lake surrounded by volcanoes and indigenous villages. We explore San Juan La Laguna, a lakeside village renowned for its weaving cooperatives. Meet local artisans, see natural dyeing in action, and learn traditional backstrap loom techniques.
Visit a fabulous Museum of Mayan Textiles, it is home to one of the world’s most important collections of indigenous clothing and weaving techniques. Day 1: Tuesday 23rd March 2027: Arrive Guatemala: (D)
Welcome to stunning Guatemala Private transfer from La Aurora International Airport (GUA) to your boutique hotel in Antigua.
Guests participating in this tour are invited to rendezvous in the Hotel lobby later this afternoon for a tour briefing before departing on a brief tour then continue on to our ‘Welcome Dinner’.
Day 2: Wednesday 24th March 2027: Antigua: (B) Antigua Walking tour with Textile Immersion:
Today our tour includes an Antigua walking tour with fabulous textile Immersion moments, visiting the colonial monuments of Antigua (UNESCO Heritage). And this afternoon we visit the San Antonio Aguas Calientes, a premier weaving centre. Famous for its traditional Mayan backstrap loom weaving, particularly two-sided brocade textiles, Meet the local hosts to learn about the complex "brocade" weaving and the symbolism behind Mayan patterns. This evening is at your leisure.
Day 3: Thursday 25th March 2027: Antigua – Lake Atitlán: (B/D) The Great Chichicastenango Market:
Today we drive to the Highlands for the Sunday Market. The Great Chichicastenango Market, one of Central America's largest and most vibrant indigenous markets. Maya traders from surrounding villages wear their traditional dress and sell handwoven textiles, embroidered huipiles, carved masks, ceramics, flowers and fragrant spices. The air is alive with the scent of incense and street food as rituals continue on the steps of the Santo Tomás Church, where ancient Mayan beliefs blend seamlessly with Catholic traditions. Wandering through Chichicastenango is not just shopping—it’s a deep immersion into living culture, centuries-old customs and the beating heart of indigenous Guatemala. We spend time here navigating the textile rich aisles. Later this afternoon we continue our drive to Panajachel, Lake Atitlán. Check into our hotel and enjoy a delicious local dinner.
Day 4: Friday 26th March 2027: Lake Atitlán: (B) The Weavers of San Juan La Laguna:
Today we take a private boat trip to San Juan. We visit female-led weaving cooperatives specializing in organic cotton and natural dyes (using indigo, cochineal, and bark). Experience a hands-on demonstration of the backstrap loom. The weavers create intricate huipiles, shawls and table linens, each pattern telling a story of identity, nature and community. Natural dyes made from plants, flowers and insects—most famously cochineal for rich reds—are still prepared by hand, resulting in remarkably vibrant colours. learn about their craft and support a sustainable women-led cooperative that preserves culture while empowering the local community. Before we return to our hotel we vis the Atitlan nature reserve and gardens. Later, we return to Panajachel. This evening is at your leisure. (Today is Good Friday)
Day 5: Saturday 27th March 2027: Lake Atitlán – Guatemala City: (B) "Blue Village" visit:
This morning, we embark on a scenic boat ride to the enchanting "Blue Village," renowned for its striking, distinctive geometric patterns that adorn its buildings and streets. As we wander through this picturesque village, every corner offers a photo-worthy glimpse of its artistic heritage and vibrant charm. Our visit also includes a stop at the House of Culture, where we can explore local art, crafts, and traditions, gaining a deeper insight into the village’s unique history and creative spirit. Later drive to Guatemala City. (Today is Good Friday)
Day 6: Sunday 28th March 2027: Guatemala City: (B) Museum of Mayan Textiles & City Tour:
This morning, we explore the vibrant Modern City, discovering its unique blend of contemporary life and rich cultural heritage. The highlight of our tour is the Ixchel Museum of Mayan Textiles, home to one of the world’s most significant collections of indigenous dress. Here, we admire exquisitely woven garments, intricate embroidery, and ceremonial textiles that tell the stories of Mayan communities through centuries-old traditions. Following the museum visit, we head to the bustling Central Market, where the sights, sounds, and aromas bring the city to life. This is the perfect opportunity to select high-quality textiles, handcrafted souvenirs, and local treasures, making final acquisitions that celebrate the artistry and heritage of the region.
Day 7: Monday 29th March 2027: Depart Guatemala: (B)
Our small group tour concludes after breakfast and for most guests today it is time to say farewell to acquaintances, new-found friends and Guatemala.
At your leisure before your private transfer to La Aurora International Airport for your onward or homebound journey.
